8 APR 2014-SOCIALIZATION
There are many view points, articles, techniques, etc. with regards to socializing a dog. I won't go into what is good or not, I will only state from my perspective as a dog sitting why it IS important to socialize your dog.
-Dogs for the most part, like humans, NEED, interacting with others. Be it from humans, dogs, or other types of animals.
-As a pet sitter, whether the dogs come to my home, or I visit in their home, I have seen a huge difference between types of dogs who have been socialized((outside their own family)) and those who have had little or no exposure to proper socialization. It is almost like night and day. I would NOT say it is good or bad, but I will say that a well socialized dog seems to be:
* less stressed out/especially around other dogs
* more outgoing/overall "happy"
* not confused whether to be aggressive or not towards a stranger
in their "comfort zone"
* more inquisitive of their surrounding/want to explore new things
* easier to adapt to different surroundings quicker
I DO AGREE that ALL puppies NEED TO BE SOCIALIZED at a young age. Even when the puppies are removed from their mother, and sent to a single person, a family with or without pet, it is VERY WISE, to continue some type of continued socialization with other dogs/animals and people in a positive manner. In addition, although trying to socialize OLDER dogs can be very difficult, I think in MOST CASES, it is NOT impossible. It just take a lot of patience, time, and training.
Please consider socializing your dog(s) whenever possible to other dogs/people. This can be done by:
-Attending dog classes((not only for your dog(s), but for yourself to learn about dog behavior, calming/warning signs, etc.))
-Friends/Family with pets
-Trips to the beach, park, hiking, etc.
